Why are we doing this?

This survey will provide us with valuable information, which will be used to evaluate our services during the Covid-19 lockdown.

What we found out

89% of people found the welfare calls they received from their local estate office to be either helpful, informative or reassuring.

The main reason people wanted estate offices to remain open, even if it was reduced opening hours, was so that they could pay their rent.

What difference has it made?

We are going to review all our procedures to include more support and welfare calls for tenants.

We have updated our system with current contact details following the welfare calls.

We are reviewing re-opening our Estate Offices.

Why are we doing this?

The Climate Emergency is one of the most important topics of our time and one which we must address quickly. The Welsh Government declared a Climate Emergency in Wales, thereby setting ambitious plans for the public sector to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The Council has also declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency which will target the decarbonisation of Council operations and promote the protection and enhancement of its natural environment.  Full Council approved a motion to develop a clear Decarbonisation Plan for the authority. The Plan will set an agenda and programme of works for creating a ‘carbon positive’ organisation.

We are asking you the community, for your feedback, ideas, discussion points that will ultimately feed into the creation and establishment of our Decarbonisation plan. We know that our work will centre on the 4 main categories highlighted, and we will give you a bit of background to each one. However;  we welcome your thoughts and ideas for each topic, and how we can create exciting and innovative projects,  that will not only support the aims and objectives of our plan, but also support the protection and enhancement of our natural environment for future generations.

What we found out

The consultation showed us that in general people were supportive of the actions and activities that we were proposing to undertake as part of the plan.  We received a handful of comments from people who expressed concern about the amount of money that would be required in order to implement all of the actions, and questioning whether this work should be a priority in the current pandemic emergency.  However, on the whole respondents were supportive and felt that some ideas could be taken even further to ensure a real difference can be made to carbon emissions and the climate emergency.

What difference has it made?

The views that people expressed in the consultation were shared with Elected Members and officers, and were used to shape the final version of WCBC’s decarbonisation plan.  This plan was approved by full Council in May 2021 (see attached plan).

Why are we doing this?

In 2019, members of UK Youth Parliament voted ‘Put an End to Knife Crime – too many young people’s lives are lost to knife crime, the government need to do more to help end the knife crime epidemic’ as their top issue for 2020.

Therefore, in order to find out more about the issue of Knife Crime in Wrexham, the Member and Deputy Member of UK Youth Parliament for Wrexham, with support from the Senedd yr Ifanc, have created a short questionnaire to ask other young people their opinion. This questionnaire will take approx. 10 minutes to complete and has 18 questions.

The aim of the questionnaire is to give the Member and Deputy member of the UK Youth Parliament a clearer understanding of Knife Crime in Wrexham.

This questionnaire is completely anonymous; we would like you to answer the questions openly and honestly. You are able to pass any questions that you may not want to answer.

This questionnaire is aimed at young people who live, attend school or work in Wrexham and its surrounding communities.

What we found out

The aim of the questionnaire was to gain knowledge of the current knife crime situation in Wrexham from a young person point of view. Information found from this consultation:

106 young people aged 11 -25 completed the questionnaire.

71 young people thought there was knife crime issue in the UK
36 young people thought there was a knife crime issue in Wrexham while
42 young people were not sure if there was an issue in the area

10 young people admitted carrying a knife or sharp object
69 young people didn’t know what advice was available in Wrexham on knife crime
62 young people had not been taught about knife crime in School

What difference has it made?

The information found will help shape and guide the work of the Member and Deputy Member of UK Youth Parliament. They believe there needs to be a co-ordinated anti knife crime message spread across the county. The co-ordinated message should raise awareness of the anti knife crime message in schools, on social media platforms, youth clubs and youth groups.

From the data and responses, the Members of the UK Youth Parliament for Wrexham and the Members of the Senedd yr Ifanc would like to make the following recommendations to improve knife crime in Wrexham:

  • Further education in Wrexham high schools to raise awareness, reduce the worry and reduce knife crime.
  • Training for professionals
  • Work conducted in Wrexham to see how young people gain knives, in particular young people who are under  the age of 18.

Why are we doing this?

To consult children and young people about their lockdown experience and give them an opportunity to suggest ways in which services can support them whilst we begin to move out of lock down

What we found out

What we found out  - The consultation allowed us to discover the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people in Wrexham.  We discovered that the main concerns for young people were loneliness and not being able to meet up with friends.  The majority were concerned about missing school, both for the academic and social benefits.  In addition young people were missing older family members like grandparents, and were very worried about their safety.  We also discovered what young people would like to see when they are finally able to return to youth work settings.  Ironically but not surprisingly the Wrexham consultation mirrored the findings from the Childrens Commissioner Consultation with very similar worries and concerns being highlighted.

What difference has it made?

What difference has it made? The consultation has allowed us to explore the emotional and physical impact of the pandemic.  It has allowed us to tailor our services to suit the expressed needs of young people and in some circumstances, highlighted family issues that has been signposted to appropriate services.  All in all this piece of work has allowed us to support, encourage and motivate young people through these unprecedented times and plan services to help young people and the community road to normality.
